Committee To Research Leadership Styles
by Lyle Lockwood

The first opportunity to use our Project Management Research Coordinating Committee (see “Chapter Forms Research Committee”) is on a project University of Dayton professors Dr. David Lee, PMP (a chapter member) and Dr. Patrick Sweeney are conducting to examine various influence strategies and tactics that project managers use with their teams. The level of emotional intelligence (EI) appears to be one key determinant affecting how project managers interface with their team members. While it is interesting to view independent assessments of influence methods and emotional intelligence, major benefits can occur when we understand the linkage between these two topics.

Dayton / Miami Valley PMI Chapter members, as persons actively engaged in the profession of project management, will be invited to participate in this research project. Participation is strictly voluntary. Participants will receive a packet containing three survey instruments that will take about one hour to complete. Those members completing the three surveys will receive a personal evaluation of their Emotional Intelligence about one month from the time the completed surveys are returned. The personal evaluation of your Emotional Intelligence will be extensive (about five pages long) and will include 20 scores and commentary on such topics as stress management, problem solving, self-actualization, assertiveness, self-regard, and optimism. This EQ-I evaluation normally retails for $25.00. (NOTE: If you receive a packet and choose not to participate, please return the unmarked material in the addressed and stamped envelope included in the package. )

Dr. Lee and Dr. Sweeney plan to use these survey results to determine emotional intelligence patterns and possible correlation with influence tactics of program/project managers. They again plan to share these research results at the Annual PMI Seminar/Symposium – but in this case, they will share results with the PMI Dayton/Miami Valley Chapter membership first!

To participate: Contact Dr. Patrick Sweeney at the University of Dayton by phone, 229-2238, or via e-mail at psweeney@engr.udayton.edu.

All of us in project management recognize that successful, project managers must be able to effectively influence their team members. Participate! Discover your Emotional Intelligence!

Students Explore Project Management

The Dayton Miami/Valley Chapter gave area youth a chance to experience hands-on project management at the annual Career Exploration Weekend on February 19 and 20 at the Boonshoft Museum of Discovery. The Career Exploration Weekend was created to provide students in grades 5 through 12 the opportunity to explore some aspect of science or engineering as a possible career. The event was sponsored by the Affiliate Societies Council of Dayton as an educational outreach project. Lyle Lockwood, PMP, created and managed the Chapter’s exhibit. Lyle is the Chapter delegate to the Affiliate Societies Council.

Students get hands-on project management experience as they try to arrange the tasks for the project "Baking Cookies for Your Homeroom."

College students Sarah Clark and David Malwitz struggle with the "Planning a Party" project.

Kristen Englesman and Hillary Sletten of Explorer Post 527 (sponsored by Universal Technology Corporation of Beavercreek and run by Chapter Member Lyle Lockwood), helped staff the Exhibit.

Visitors to the chapter exhibit were challenged to organize tasks in a logical order for one or more projects: hosting a party, baking cookies for homeroom at school, or preparing a research report. In addition to the students who participated, several parents, science teachers and other exhibitors tried their hands at organizing tasks in the project exercises. One science teacher commented that the exhibit was very good for the students and should help them be better organized to complete school projects. All participants were given a handout on called “Introduction to Project Management” they could used to help plan other projects. The handout also contained information on PMI and identified the Dayton Chapter as an additional source of information.

To obtain information about future events or to use of the exhibit at a local school or event, contact Lyle Lockwood, PMP via e-mail or at 426-8530.
